This is how funny my dad could be. Unbelievable.
Career Choice or hoise? Find out!
One day my dad stood and looked directly into my eyes and asked; son, what would you like to be when you grow up? Having seen another old man come to our place bragging of how his rope making job had caused him to walk around a lot and helped him to learn multiple languages including Luo and Luhya. The naive boy looked into his father's eyes and said with excitement, "a rope maker dad".Hoping to get an applause or a warm reception from him, what I encountered was a disappointed eye and a shaky long nose that expressed displeasure. For me, as a young man, all I wanted was to travel the world, create stories and meet new people. I didn't know of any other career having grown in the village all my days.
My dad expected me to mention lucrative high-end careers with white color jobs which none of those lingered in my mind. To water and to quench his thirst, I hurriedly changed and said, "dad I'm kidding, I want to be a lawyer". Suddenly his happy face was restored.
The old man then sat me down and said, "look, all I want for you is the best, I want you to get to where I never got and achieve what I never achieved." Right now, being the man I am, and looking back, I now understand what he meant, he simply was passing down his wishes to me and wanted me to live the life he desired for himself. That's how our African parents were wired.
Long story short, I am not a lawyer, neither do I seat in anyone's white color office job. I am what i am. My talents, and passions have defined me well enough and brought out the best in me.
I champion for Mental health.
I am Ken Kayange
